St. Michaels 10/10-13

St. Michaels

We left Rock Hall early in the morning. It was a beautiful morning and the water around was like a mirror. There was a beautiful sunrise that reflected on the water and made everything around it look magical. Susan and Don were up and on deck of their boat so Susan got a great photo of our boat in front of the sunset. We left Rock Hall right when it was getting light out. There was a house with an enormous field next to it right at the entrance to the harbor and there was a bald eagle in the tree and a deer in their yard. It was crazy! It was a beautiful day out, but there was not enough wind for a sail. We motored the whole time. We did a manta trawl when we were almost halfway there. We got to St. Michaels around lunchtime. We anchored out in the harbor and then walked into town to get some lunch. We went to a delicious sushi place. Jessie (finally!) lost her tooth that had been wiggly since before we left Cape Cod, which dad had threatened to pull out almost every day. We left lunch and finally convinced Mom and Dad to bring us out for ice cream. We found an ice cream shop that served Kilby Cream ice cream that comes happy cows on a sustainable farm. Jessie and I got milkshakes and Stan got ice cream. It was so good. Then we went to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. My favorite part was the lighthouse. It was so cool to learn about the life of lighthouse keepers. We were there for almost two hours and we did not get to see even half of the museum. After we went to the museum we took a dinghy ride around the harbor to look at some of the boats there. There were some really cool boats. After we went on the dinghy ride we went and visited Susan and Don on their boat, Blue Dancer. They had arrived a little after us. Their boat was really nice. I am not sure what kind of boat it is. It was dinner time by then so we went back to the boat and had a quick dinner of spaghetti and then went to bed pretty soon after that.

The next morning we got up pretty early because everyone had gone to bed really early the night before. We ate a quick breakfast and then decided to go back to the museum. Jessie and I both picked something to write about. I picked to write about what life was like for a lighthouse keeper. I spent a long time in the lighthouse reading every sign and looking thoroughly through everything. It took hours. I photographed a lot of interesting things and looked through every drawer. We went out for lunch at a popular local restaurant where I had crab for the second time. After lunch Mom and Jessie went for a walk around town and Dad, Stan, and I went to a playground that we had seen earlier. It was a pirate ship so we played pirates for a while and balled up our sweatshirts and threw them at dad as cannonballs. It was really fun. we played at the playground for awhile and then we went back to the museum. Stan scraped at the dugout canoe they were making with an oyster shell for a long time. Dad talked to the dock master for a while. Dad arranged for us to stay at the Maritime Museum’s dock. After that we went to the wildfowl exhibit. It had a lot of beautiful hand carved, hand painted decoys. The decoys were really cool but I did not really like it in there because there were a lot of guns and it talked about sport hunting a lot. We finally met up with Mom and Jessie. We went out to the boat and raised anchor, then went over to the Maritime Museum’s dock. It was almost dinner so we went back out to the boat where mom made her vegan shepherds pie for dinner. Yum!!

The next morning we woke up late and were lazy for most of the morning. It was rainy and not the nicest day so we went to the library to catch up with schoolwork and work on the blog. We went out to lunch at the cafe next door. While we were waiting we played some games. After lunch we went back to the library. We went back to the boat at around 3:00 because the library was closing. We had seen a lot of jellyfish earlier in the week so we decide to go and try to catch some. I had heard that they hurt when you get stung by them so I had no intention of actually touching them. We caught them in buckets and then looked at them and counted how many we had. Soon we had about 15 jellyfish in various plastic cups and moms measuring cups. We caught a big one and Jessie named it Holy Guacamole because that is what she yelled when she caught it. We had a great dinner. Stan fell asleep during dinner so we put him right to bed and then played the board game Sequence for the first time. Susan gave us Sequence because Don really did not like it. We like it though.

We woke up at around 7:00 the next morning and then left St. Michaels at around 10:00 for Solomon's Island.
